RIBA Stirling Prize 2025 Shortlist: Watch the Video on the Transformative Appleby Blue Almshouse
We are delighted to introduce a compelling new video released by RIBA Architecture, spotlighting one of the most socially significant projects on the RIBA Stirling Prize 2025 shortlist: the Appleby Blue Almshouse.
The video provides an in-depth look at this visionary development that is redefining accommodation for older persons in central London.
A New Model for Community-Focused Living
Located in Bermondsey, the project is lauded for its unique reimagining of the traditional almshouse model, providing 57 high-quality homes for 65 residents. The design emphasises community and integration, placing shared social spaces on the high street to ensure they are visible and accessible to both residents and the broader community.
As noted in the video, the design team focused on creating a building that truly changes people's lives. By building "sociality right into the heart of this building" and arranging the accommodation around a tranquil central garden court, Appleby Blue serves as a powerful model for the future of integrated social housing.
