UK's Best Building 2025
Appleby Blue is JTRE London’s second scheme, delivered for United St Saviour’s Charity. Designed by Witherford Watson Mann Architects to be an Almshouse for the 21st century, the development consists of 57 homes, gardens and community space and has won numerous awards including the RIBA Stirling Award 2025.
The Stirling Prize win is a turning point for housing in London. It demonstrates the impact developers can achieve when working with the public and charity sectors deliver genuine social value.
The first Almshouse to be built in Southwark for decades specifically designed for older people it will help meet the shortage of social housing in the borough. It provides genuinely low cost homes for around 90 Southwark residents, enabling them to grow older and to stay part of their community.
Appleby Blue offers a hopeful and imaginative response, where residents and the surrounding community are brought together through the transformative nature of the design.
The Stirling Prize win adds to Appleby Blue’s growing list of accolades, including the Housing Architecture Award at the Dezeen Awards 2024, and the Overall Grand Prix award at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards.
